Sermonus Trade State
Type: Trade State
Location: Central East
Capital: Sermonus is the only city of this nation.
Rukh Alignment: The Ruhk of this city has always been under the sway of black ruhk as it is run by a council of men who live consumed by a will of avarice and a hunger for power. They often buy slaves and have been known to do shady things for money even at the expense of others. But for all it's rotten underside, the people of the town are generally peace loving party folk. Their job is to make the port city a place that is a pleasant stay for the many traders and delagates from other nations whom have used the city as a central trading hub. So they throw nightly feasts sponsored by the merchants who own the city. So there is much joy and cheer to be had in this country and generally the white ruhk are more plentiful. But since the disappearance of the Magi, the black rukh has been steadily growing as the merchants owning the city go unchecked by foreign powers.
OVERVIEW
Climate/Weather
While the winters are mild with a bit of rainfall and perhaps one or two real storms per year, the rest of the year is hot and dry. Most of Sermonus' land is desert but it meets the central sea that connects all the eastern countries. Because of the high amount of ruhk there is flowing around the sea due to so much human transpot of magican goods, the seas have produced more rain than in recent history which affects Sermonus as well as other countries by the sea.
Plantlife
There are very few plants that grow in this region as it is mostly desert. There are some trees and grass near the city but other than that all that surrounds Sermonus' lands is sand and dry rock.
Wildlife
Mostly just lizards, scorpions, and other creatures one might think to find in such lands. Camels are the main livestock as beasts of burden. The city owners spent a great fortune to have magical beasts bred for war imported from the Medeis Imperium. Now armored wyvrens and golems wander the deserts surrounding the city keeping them safe from invasion. But it also make the city entirely reliant on its port for trade.
Architecture
The city is a bustling port with large city attached that has an ancient religious history. The grand structures of the worlds most popular trading spot surprisingly contain a great many churches and small palaces left over from the countries distant past. Now the tipped spires stand over debauchery and greed instead of fealty and prayers.
Locals
The people of Sermonus generally wear middle eastern robes and clothing. The more exoctic the dye of their robes, the richer the wearer is usually the case in this city. But even the "poor" wear decent clothing and look respectable.
POLITICS
Sermonus is controlled by a council of over 20 merchants. They are all the stock holders who own a piece of the city. Power is shared between then based on the size of their share which often gets used as politcal pieces between them making the power struggle of the leadership position a constant game of musical chairs. However the "competition" between them all is friendly in nature. The merchants all know that to profit the most they must help each other. The current leading share holders are the following people:
Hamir Badin - A young entrepeneur who started his business in Sermonus when he was 12. In just three years he became the youngest person to ever sit on the council of the 20 share holders. Despite his age he is incredibly dangerous and knows how to use peoples emotions as targets for intmidation to get his way without having to fight. He is incredibly clever and known to have a thing for beautiful foreign women. It's rumored that he keeps buying new female slaves because he gets bored of the old ones, but its really because he's simply a greedy collector and wants to own one of every kind of woman.
Shariff Myaesala - An older woman who is one of thee females on the council. This old woman isn't to be underestimated. She is as sharp as she is blind, which is totally by the way, and she had been on the council since its inception 130 years ago. No one is quite sure how old she is, but its clear that she is nearing the end of her life. Being one of the top three share holders, everyone on the council is interested to see who will inherit her share and many have been trying to gain her favor.
Budaal Ysif - A middle aged pig of a man who was born into his share and greedily collected even more wealth since the day he could walk. He uses the loyal and honorable servant bound to his father to do all the trading for him while he enjoys a life of decadence and pleasure inside his small palace. He is currently the largest share holder but the man himself is incompetent. His success is entirely thanks to the efforts of Rolfus Maxinarn.
CULTURE
As a country of traders most of the locals are just out to make more money and party. Some live empty lives this way but most are content with the way things are. Making money is a game and when people out of town come to port they often don't know the rules. Many locals will jump on those who look inexperienced in trade eager to rip them off. But that is mainly near the bazaar. If you can escape to the residential area or to the scene of the night light you'll find simple people leading simple lives. For the rich in town it is more or less the same albeit much more extravagant and sometimes in overabundance.
INFRASTRUCTURE & ECONOMY
Housing
From the rich to the poor, what kind of housing to they possess? But more than just that, how is the average house hold of each financial class? A brief overview will do.
Hunger Level
No one goes hungry in Sermonus. The City owners distribute a fraction of their wealth to the small local population to ensure the streets are "dirtied by filth" as the Merchant who proposed the idea so elegantly put it.
Slavery Status
While there is no slave market held in Sermonus itself, the merchants who own the city often purchase slaves overseas and return with them in tow. None of the population itself is enslaved unless someone commits a grave crime that would incur the wrath of everyone. Not just the cities owners. Although some unlucky few have been caught in debt traps which may as well be slavery as victims are forced to work for low wages to pay back debts with high interest rates.
Exports/Imports
The amount of goods moving through Sermonus are far too many to count, however since the Magi disappeared, this like dangerous magic tools that use black rukh and magically altered beasts have hit the black market. But on the open the ports deals in everything from fine wines to fluffy furs and goods from countries all over the world are exchanged there.
